Memorial Reaccredited as Chest Pain Center

Memorial Hospital has been reaccredited as a Chest Pain Center with PCI (Percutaneous Coronary Interventions) from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC).

Update: See our most recent Chest Pain Center re-accreditation.

Memorial received its initial Chest Pain Center accreditation in 2008.

Memorial is among 575 hospitals nationwide and one of just 32 accredited Chest Pain Centers with PCI in Illinois.

“Our reaccreditation as a Chest Pain Center is another example of Memorial’s commitment to provide the community with exceptional healthcare and compassionate service,” said Nancy Weston, RN, vice president of patient care services and chief nursing officer.  “Our Chest Pain Center team continues to implement new and enhanced processes which meet the highest standards recognized for cardiac care.

To become an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Memorial went through rigorous evaluation by SCPC for its ability to assess, diagnose, and treat patients in an efficient manner who may be experiencing a heart attack. To the community served by Memorial Hospital, this means that processes are in place that meet strict criteria aimed at:

  • Reducing the time from onset of symptoms to diagnosis and treatment
  • Treating patients more quickly during the critical window of time when the integrity of the heart muscle can be preserved
  • Monitoring patients when it is not certain that they are having a heart attack to ensure that they are not sent home too quickly or needlessly admitted to the hospital

“Memorial’s Chest Pain Center accreditation is another wonderful example of the collaboration, competence and commitment that our staff demonstrates in providing exceptional service to our patients,” added Mark J. Turner, president and CEO.

Hospitals that have received SCPC accreditation have achieved a higher level of expertise in dealing with patients who arrive with symptoms of a heart attack. The Centers emphasize the importance of standardized diagnostic and treatment programs that provide more efficient and effective evaluation as well as appropriate and rapid treatment of patients with chest pain and other heart attack symptoms. Chest Pain Centers also serve as a point of entry into the healthcare system to evaluate and treat other medical problems, and they help to promote a healthier lifestyle in an attempt to reduce the risk factors for heart attack.

“People tend to wait when they think they might be having a heart attack, and that’s a mistake,” said Dr. Savoy Brummer, medical director of Memorial’s Emergency Department. “Time is muscle and patients should not hesitate calling 9-1-1 if they think they’re having a heart attack.  The emergency medical technicians in the field can begin treatment before the patient reaches the emergency department.

“The average patient arrives in the emergency department more than two hours after the onset of symptoms, but what they don’t realize is that the sooner a heart attack is treated, the less damage to the heart and the better the outcome for the patient.”

As a Heart and Vascular Center of Excellence, Memorial provides a full continuum of care for the heart patient including pre-hospital evaluation by EMS, emergency department, cardiac catheterization lab, cardiac surgery, cardiac rehabilitation, heart failure clinic, quality assurance, and community outreach.  As an Accredited Chest Pain Center, Memorial has demonstrated its commitment to the high standards established by the society.

A Magnet-recognized facility, Memorial also has earned the Distinguished Hospital Award from Healthgrades, placing it in the top 5% of hospitals nationwide.  In addition, Memorial is five-star rated by Healthgrades in the treatment of heart failure.
